Estat del benestar
PobresaClassificació : 00 Economia Resum : Inequality is one of our most urgent social problems. Curbed in the decades after World War II, it has recently returned with a vengeance. We all know the scale of the problem―talk about the 99% and the 1% is entrenched in public debate―but there has been little discussion of what we can do but despair. According to the distinguished economist Anthony Atkinson, however, we can do much more than skeptics imagine.
Atkinson has long been at the forefront of research on inequality, and brings his theoretical and practical experience to bear on its diverse problems. He presents a comprehensive set of policies that could bring about a genuine shift in the distribution of income in developed countries. The problem, Atkinson shows, is not simply that the rich are getting richer. We are also failing to tackle poverty, and the economy is rapidly changing to leave the majority of people behind. To reduce inequality, we have to go beyond placing new taxes on the wealthy to fund existing programs. We need fresh ideas. Atkinson thus recommends ambitious new policies in five areas: technology, employment, social security, the sharing of capital, and taxation. He defends these against the common arguments and excuses for inaction: that intervention will shrink the economy, that globalization makes action impossible, and that new policies cannot be afforded.
More than just a program for change, Atkinson’s book is a voice of hope and informed optimism about the possibilities for political action.Permalink : https://bibliotecatriasfargas.cat/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3 Inequality : what can be done? Títol : The pricing of progress : economic indicators and the capitalization of American life Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Eli Cook Editorial : Cambridge, Mas. : Harvard University Press Data de publicació : 2017 Nombre de pàgines : 352 p Dimensions : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-674-97628-3 Nota general : Inclou bibliografia Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Economia -- Estats Units d'Amèrica
Economia -- HistòriaClassificació : 017 Història econòmica Resum : How did Americans come to quantify their society's progress and well-being in units of money? In today's GDP-run world, prices are the standard measure of not only our goods and commodities but our environment, our communities, our nation, even our self-worth. The Pricing of Progress traces the long history of how and why we moderns adopted the monetizing values and valuations of capitalism as an indicator of human prosperity while losing sight of earlier social and moral metrics that did not put a price on everyday life. Cook roots the rise of economic indicators in the emergence of modern capitalism and the contested history of English enclosure, Caribbean slavery, American industrialization, economic thought, and corporate power. He explores how the maximization of market production became the chief objective of American economic and social policy. We see how distinctly capitalist quantification techniques used to manage or invest in railroad corporations, textile factories, real estate holdings, or cotton plantations escaped the confines of the business world and seeped into every nook and cranny of society. As economic elites quantified the nation as a for-profit, capitalized investment, the progress of its inhabitants, free or enslaved, came to be valued according to their moneymaking abilities. Today as in the nineteenth century, political struggles rage over who gets to determine the statistical yardsticks used to gauge the "health" of our economy and nation. The Pricing of Progress helps us grasp the limits and dangers of entrusting economic indicators to measure social welfare and moral goals.-- Permalink : https://bibliotecatriasfargas.cat/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3 The pricing of progress : economic indicators and the capitalization of American life [text imprès] / Eli Cook . - Cambridge, Mas. : Harvard University Press, 2017 . - 352 p ; 25 cm.

Títol : The Public option : How to Expand freedom, increase opportunity, and promote equality Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Sitaraman, Ganesh, Autor ; Alstott, Anne L., Autor Editorial : Cambridge, Mas. : Harvard University Press Data de publicació : 2019 Nombre de pàgines : 284 p. Dimensions : 22 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-674-98733-3 Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Sector públic Classificació : 00 Economia Resum : A solution to inequalities wherever we look-in health care, secure retirement, education-is as close as the public library. Or the post office, community pool, or local elementary school. Public options-reasonably priced government-provided services that coexist with private options-are all around us, ready to increase opportunity, expand freedom, and reawaken civic engagement if we will only let them. Whenever you go to your local public library, send mail via the post office, or visit Yosemite, you are taking advantage of a longstanding American tradition: the public option. Some of the most useful and beloved institutions in American life are public options-yet they are seldom celebrated as such. These government-supported opportunities coexist peaceably alongside private options, ensuring equal access and expanding opportunity for all. Ganesh Sitaraman and Anne Alstott challenge decades of received wisdom about the proper role of government and consider the vast improvements that could come from the expansion of public options. Far from illustrating the impossibility of effective government services, as their critics claim, public options hold the potential to transform American civic life, offering a wealth of solutions to seemingly intractable problems, from housing shortages to the escalating cost of health care. Imagine a low-cost, high-quality public option for child care. Or an extension of the excellent Thrift Savings Plan for federal employees to all Americans. Or every person having access to an account at the Federal Reserve Bank, with no fees and no minimums. From broadband internet to higher education, The Public Option reveals smart new ways to meet pressing public needs while spurring healthy competition. More effective than vouchers or tax credits, public options could offer us all fairer choices and greater security. ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-674-24158-9 Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Finances -- Dret i legislació Classificació : 178 Dret financer Resum : Shoppers with a bargain-hunting impulse and internet access can find a universe of products at their fingertips. This thought-provoking expose invites us to explore how sophisticated algorithms and data-crunching are changing the nature of market competition, and not always for the better. Introducing into the policy lexicon the terms algorithmic collusion, behavioral discrimination, and super-platforms, Virtual Competition explores the resulting impact on competition, our democratic ideals, our wallets, and our well-being. "A convincing argument that there can be a darker side to the growth of digital commerce. The replacement of the invisible hand of competition by the digitized hand of internet commerce can give rise to anticompetitive behavior that the competition authorities are ill equipped to deal with." -Burton G. Malkiel, Wall Street Journal "We owe the authors our deep gratitude for anticipating and explaining the consequences of living in a world in which black boxes collude and leave no trails behind. They make it clear that in a world of big data and algorithmic pricing, consumers are outgunned and antitrust laws are outdated, especially in the United States." -Science "A convincing case for the need to rethink competition law to cope with algorithmic capitalism's potential for malfeasance." -John Naughton, The Observer "A fascinating book about how platform internet companies (Amazon, Facebook, and so on) are changing the norms of economic competition." -Ben Schiller, Fast Company Nota de contingut : Inclou Notes Permalink : https://bibliotecatriasfargas.cat/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4 Virtual competition : the promise and perils of the algorithm-driven economy [text imprès] / Ezrachi, Ariel, Autor ; Stucke, Maurice E., Autor . - Cambridge, Mas. : Harvard University Press, 2019 . - 356 p. : Il., gràf. ; 21 cm.
