Títol : Capitalism without capital : the rise of the intangible economy Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Jonathan Haskel ; Stian Westlake Editorial : Princeton : Princeton University Press Data de publicació : 2018 Nombre de pàgines : x, 278 p. ll. : il., gràf. Dimensions : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-691-17503-4 Nota general : Inclou notes, referències i índex Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Economia Classificació : 00 Economia Resum : The first comprehensive account of the growing dominance of the intangible economy Early in the twenty-first century, a quiet revolution occurred. For the first time, the major developed economies began to invest more in intangible assets, like design, branding, R&D, or software, than in tangible assets, like machinery, buildings, and computers. For all sorts of businesses, from tech firms and pharma companies to coffee shops and gyms, the ability to deploy assets that one can neither see nor touch is increasingly the main source of long-term success. But this is not just a familiar story of the so-called new economy. Capitalism without Capital shows that the growing importance of intangible assets has also played a role in some of the big economic changes of the last decade. The rise of intangible investment is, Jonathan Haskel and Stian Westlake argue, an underappreciated cause of phenomena from economic inequality to stagnating productivity. Haskel and Westlake bring together a decade of research on how to measure intangible investment and its impact on national accounts, showing the amount different countries invest in intangibles, how this has changed over time, and the latest thinking on how to assess this. They explore the unusual economic characteristics of intangible investment, and discuss how these features make an intangible-rich economy fundamentally different from one based on tangibles. Capitalism without Capital concludes by presenting three possible scenarios for what the future of an intangible world might be like, and by outlining how managers, investors, and policymakers can exploit the characteristics of an intangible age to grow their businesses, portfolios, and economies. Títol : Patient capital : the challenges and promises of long-term investing Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Victoria Ivashina Editorial : Princeton : Princeton University Press Data de publicació : 2019 Nombre de pàgines : 247 p. ll. : il., gràf. Dimensions : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-691-18673-3 Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Inversions Classificació : 7 Inversions i gestió de carteres Resum : How to overcome barriers to the long-term investments that are essential for solving the world's biggest problems There has never been a greater need for long-term investments to tackle the world's most difficult problems, such as climate change and decaying infrastructure. And it is increasingly unlikely that the public sector will be willing or able to fill this gap. If these critical needs are to be met, the major pools of long-term, patient capital-including pensions, sovereign wealth funds, university endowments, and wealthy individuals and families-will have to play a large role. In this accessible and authoritative account of long-term capital investment, two leading experts on the subject, Harvard Business School professors Victoria Ivashina and Josh Lerner, highlight the significant hurdles facing long-term investors and propose concrete ways to overcome these difficulties. Presenting the best evidence in an engaging way by using memorable stories and examples, Patient Capital describes how large investors increasingly want and need long-run investments that have the potential to deliver greater returns than those in the public markets. Yet success in such investments has been the exception. Performance has suffered from both the limitations of investors and the internal structure of their fund managers, often resulting in the wrong incentives and a lack of long-term planning. Yet the challenges facing long-term investors can be surmounted and the rewards are potentially large, both for investors and society as a whole. Patient Capital shows how to make long-term investment work better for everyone. Títol : Digital cash : the unknown history of the anarchists, utopians, and technologists who created cryptocurrency Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Finn Brunton Editorial : Princeton : Princeton University Press Data de publicació : 2019 Nombre de pàgines : 255 p. Dimensions : 22 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-691-17949-0 Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Moneda electrònica Classificació : 44 Moneda. Sistema monetari Resum : Bitcoin may appear to be a revolutionary form of digital cash without precedent or prehistory. In fact, it is only the best-known recent experiment in a long line of similar efforts going back to the 1970s. But the story behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and its blockchain technology has largely been untold—until now. In Digital Cash, Finn Brunton reveals how technological utopians and political radicals created experimental money to bring about their visions of the future: protecting privacy or bringing down governments, preparing for apocalypse or launching a civilization of innovation and abundance that would make its creators immortal.
The incredible story of the pioneers of cryptocurrency takes us from autonomous zones on the high seas to the world’s most valuable dump, from bank runs to idea coupons, from time travelers in a San Francisco bar to the pattern securing every twenty-dollar bill, and from marketplaces for dangerous secrets to a tank of frozen heads awaiting revival in the far future. Along the way, Digital Cash explores the hard questions and challenges that these innovators faced: How do we learn to trust and use different kinds of money? What makes digital objects valuable? How does currency prove itself as real to us? What would it take to make a digital equivalent to cash, something that could be created but not forged, exchanged but not copied, and which reveals nothing about its users?
Filled with marvelous characters, stories, and ideas, Digital Cash is an engaging and accessible account of the strange origins and remarkable technologies behind today’s cryptocurrency explosion.Nota de contingut : Inclou Bibliografia i Índex Permalink : https://bibliotecatriasfargas.cat/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=4 Digital cash : the unknown history of the anarchists, utopians, and technologists who created cryptocurrency [text imprès] / Finn Brunton . - Princeton : Princeton University Press, 2019 . - 255 p. ; 22 cm.

Títol : The code of capital : how the law creates wealth and inequality Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Katharina Pistor Editorial : Princeton : Princeton University Press Data de publicació : 2019 Nombre de pàgines : 297 p. Dimensions : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-691-17897-4 Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Dret financer Classificació : 178 Dret financer Resum : A compelling explanation of how the law shapes the distribution of wealth Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else. In this revealing book, Katharina Pistor argues that the law selectively "codes" certain assets, endowing them with the capacity to protect and produce private wealth. With the right legal coding, any object, claim, or idea can be turned into capital-and lawyers are the keepers of the code. Pistor describes how they pick and choose among different legal systems and legal devices for the ones that best serve their clients' needs, and how techniques that were first perfected centuries ago to code landholdings as capital are being used today to code stocks, bonds, ideas, and even expectations-assets that exist only in law. A powerful new way of thinking about one of the most pernicious problems of our time, The Code of Capital explores the different ways that debt, complex financial products, and other assets are coded to give financial advantage to their holders. This provocative book paints a troubling portrait of the pervasive global nature of the code, the people who shape it, and the governments that enforce it.
