Títol : Understanding financial crises Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Franklin Allen, Autor ; Douglas Gale, Autor Editorial : Oxford : Oxford University Press Data de publicació : 2007 Col·lecció : Clarendon lectures in finance Nombre de pàgines : x, 303 p. ll. : il. Dimensions : 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-19-925141-4 Nota general : Inclou índex i bibliografia Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Crisis financeres Classificació : 016 Crisis econòmiques i financeres Resum : What causes a financial crisis? Can financial crises be anticipated or even avoided? What can be done to lessen their impact? Should governments and international institutions intervene? Or should financial crises be left to run their course? In the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, many blamed international institutions, corruption, governments, and flawed macro and microeconomic policies not only for causing the crisis but also unnecessarily lengthening and deepening it. Based on ten years of research, the authors develop a theoretical approach to analyzing financial crises. Beginning with a review of the history of financial crises and providing readers with the basic economic tools needed to understand the literature, the authors construct a series of increasingly sophisticated models. Throughout, the authors guide the reader through the existing theoretical and empirical literature while also building on their own theoretical approach. The text presents the modern theory of intermediation, introduces asset markets and the causes of asset price volatility, and discusses the interaction of banks and markets. The book also deals with more specialized topics, including optimal financial regulation, bubbles, and financial contagion. Títol : Investment banking : institutions, politics, and law Tipus de document : text imprès Autors : Alan Morrison, Autor ; William J. Wilhelm, Autor Editorial : Oxford : Oxford University Press Data de publicació : 2007 Nombre de pàgines : ix, 341 p. ll. : il. Dimensions : 24 cm ISBN/ISSN/DL : 978-0-19-929657-6 Nota general : Inclou índex i bibliografia Idioma : Anglès (eng) Matèries : Bancs d'inversió Classificació : 41 Bancs Resum : Investment Banking: Institutions, Politics, and Law provides an economic rationale for the dominant role of investment banks in the capital markets, and uses it to explain both the historical evolution of the investment banking industry and also recent changes to its organization. Although investment decisions rely upon price-relevant information, it is impossible to establish property rights over it and hence it is very hard to coordinate its exchange. The authors argue that investment banks help to resolve this problem by managing "information marketplaces," within which extra-legal institutions support the production and dissemination of information that is important to investors. Reputations and relationships are more important in fulfilling this role than financial capital.
The authors substantiate their theory with reference to the industry's evolution during the last three centuries. They show how investment banking networks were formed, and identify the informal contracts that they supported. This historical development points to tensions between the relational contracting of investment banks and the regulatory impulses of the State, thus providing some explanation for the periodic large-scale State intervention in the operation of capital markets. Their theory also provides a technological explanation for the massive restructuring of the capital markets in recent decades, which the authors argue can be used to think about the likely future direction of the investment banking industry.Permalink : https://bibliotecatriasfargas.cat/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=1 Investment banking : institutions, politics, and law [text imprès] / Alan Morrison, Autor ; William J. No previous knowledge is assumed and nearly all topics in macroeconomics are covered, including advanced concepts such as endogenous growth or time inconsistency. It presents the "new" macroeconomics--a synthesis of the older fixed price approach and of the newer microeconomic foundations and intertemporal aspects. The work looks at the open economy and the effect of openness as a source of disturbance, emphasizing the exchange rate and the importance of capital movements and other international linkages. Each chapter includes an overview, summary section, list of key concepts, and many exercises.
